De Wildt Cheetah Research Centre

The De Wildt Cheetah Centre was established in 1971 with the aim of breeding endangered species. Over the past two decades the Center's efforts have resulted in the major achievement of breeding what was once a threatened species, the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus). Over the years, nearly 600 cheetah cubs have been born at De Wildt - a dramatic contrast to the days when the cheetah population of South Africa was estimated at a mere 700.

Botswana Safaris

Botswana Safaris - With an area of 581,730 square kilometres, Botswana is virtually the same size as France, Kenya or Texas and is situated in the centre of Southern Africa bordered by South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The most striking features of the country are its flatness and aridity. Three quarters of the country is technically a desert and this is what makes the Okavango Delta even more remarkable. It is a wonderful wetland within a desert, getting its waters from rain falling in central Africa, 1000km away. In the 1970s people living outside of the country had not even heard of the Okavango Delta. In those early days East Africa was "king", and then the Okavango Delta was discovered and was only visited by a few hardy adventurers. But things were to change. East Africa lost its gloss in the eyes of the discerning traveller as it overcrowded its parks, South Africa became a "normal" country with the release of Nelson Mandela and the whole Southern African sub-continent became a desirable region to explore. Today wildlife and tourism employs about 45% of all the people who live in northern part of the country. Well over 30% of the land has been set aside for wildlife and the focus of Botswana Safaris is on delivering the finest possible, authentic wildlife experience in Africa.

Botswana Safaris consist of 4 wildlife and wilderness highlight experiences. A stay in a water camp to explore the wetlands of the famed Okavango Delta by motorised craft or mokoro (dug out canoe). A stay in a dual or land camp to view a great variety of game and birdlife from an open safari vehicle. A venture into the Chobe area including Savute, a harsh land where the battle for survival is desperate and prides of African lion are dominant. On mobile Botswana Safaris tracking migratory herds of game through the endless vistas of the wild Kalahari. In addition, some of our special interest safaris will take you to lesser known areas and add a special touch to your Botswana sojourn. Safaris represents all accommodation establishments in Botswana, from hotels suitable for groups to luxury tented camps and lodges and old-style rustic safari camps. The emphasis is on personal service, comfort, convenience and good food, all within the spirit of wilderness life.

Botswana Safaris are extremely popular and we urge you to start planning your Botswana Safari at least one year in advance to ensure you get the best possible combination of camps and of course the wildlife experience.

Namibia Safaris

In Namibia, upon the parched palate of a vast and contradictory land, the realities of thirst have created a plethora of idiosyncratic societies. The shifting dunes of the Namib Desert are honeycombed with the greatest variety of living creatures of any dune lands around the world. The desolate skeleton coast, monument to bygone maritime disasters contrasts with the splendid holiday atmosphere of the quaint German settlement of Swakopmund. Within the precincts of Etosha Pan, the lake of a mother’s tears, where perimeter waterholes enclose the salt expanse, great herds of game are on a perpetual pub-crawl. This provides some of the most magnificent game viewing opportunities anywhere. Inland, in surrealist Damaraland, you’ll encounter various social curiosities, including the Petrified Forest; Welwitschia Mirabilis, the thousand year old underground tree; the statuesque Kokerboom; and the diminutive Damara Dik Dik, with its twitching nose. Namibia Safaris - big sky country.

A place where undulating deserts fold down to meet a tempestuous coastline, Namibia Safaris offer a diverse range of highlights: Scenic beauty including the Skeleton Coast – untouched and untamed, this desolate and uninhabited landscape is home to the rare Brown Hyena and Desert Elephants, seal colonies and is the burial ground of many ships, the Kunene River – the source of one of Africa’s greatest waterfalls, the Ruacana; the splendour of abundant bird and wildlife; unusual geological formations including Fish River Canyon, Brandberg, Spitzkoppe and the unique star-shaped dune mountains at Sossusvlei; pristine wilderness including Etosha Pan – an oasis in the centre of a vast semi-desert region, the Namib Desert – the only desert that harbours elephant, rhino, lion and giraffe; the diverse and friendly nation - vibrant African cultures blended with the architecture and traditions of the Germans, British and South Africans; Adventure opportunities – from sand boarding, canoeing, white water rafting to hot air ballooning and The Desert Express Train. Ataraxia Safaris offers a comprehensive variety of escorted tours; self drive tours and fly-in safaris; special interest and adventure packages; tailor-made tours and safari’s throughout this exciting and unique region. We cater for individual travelers, groups, conferences and incentives.

Namibia Safaris are extremely popular and we urge you to start planning your Namibia Safari at least one year in advance to ensure you get the best possible combination of camps and of course the wildlife experience.

Zambia Safaris

Zambia Safaris - When you really want to appreciate nature, solid structures are more of a hindrance than a blessing. When you arrive at a Zambian game viewing venue, you will find easy open structures fashioned of porous canvas and indigenous materials with the majesty of nature all around you - the towering trees of the wilderness, open house in camp for browsers and even the odd Puku. When you're in your tent, reeded bungalow, or thatched cottage, you are part of the warp and weft of the wilderness environment.

Birdcalls, rustlings in the grass, the distant roar of a hunting lion float right into your range of hearing and you experience the sweetness of nature's breath. Within an easy amble, the open-sided common rooms and airy enclosures allow you to congregate with your safari companions for informal conversations ... open fire reveries under the stars ... and hearty meals to set you up for a contented sleep, leading to super vigilance for game viewing excursions.

Zambia is often described as the 'real Africa' and it is easy to see why when on Zambia Safaris. The country is famed for its huge protected wilderness areas and the South Luangwa National Park is home to arguably the most diverse range of game in Africa. Birds are also found in rich profusion.

With Africa's wildlife areas rapidly disappearing, Zambia remains the least disturbed and commercialized and is still blessed with lush vegetation, abundant water and a firm commitment to preserve her vast tracts of African wilderness, spread over 19 National Parks and 33 game management areas.

Zambia Safaris offer a legendary wildlife experience on game drives in open vehicles, on walking safaris through pristine bush, or canoeing safaris down the Zambezi.

Some of the most knowledgeable wildlife experts in the world run the safari operations in Zambia. This, together with vigorous standards of training for guides, rangers and trackers ensures wildlife enthusiasts are provided with an in-depth and entertaining exploration of the African bush. The warm welcome of the Zambian people and culture provide an added dimension to an unforgettable experience.

We believe that like Botswana, Zambia is best suited to tailor made tours and safaris. Our specialized consultants will tailor make the ideal Zambian adventure based on client interest, budget and time frames available ensuring each safari epitomizes the spirit of Africa. Zambia Safaris are extremely popular and we urge you to start planning your Zambia Safari at least one year in advance to ensure you get the best possible combination of camps and of course the wildlife experience.

Kenya Safaris

If you have ever fantasized about Africa - sleeping in the bush surrounded by wildlife and walking with tribes people - then you have probably been thinking of Kenya. Kenya's natural environment and cultural heritage are almost unmatched in Africa. For many, Kenya means wildlife and up to a million wildebeest and zebra migrate across the Southern section of the country every year attracting an entourage of predators.

The Masai Mara National Park is Kenya's biggest tourist attraction and this is where The Great Migration takes place, considered to be one of the World's greatest natural phenomena. The reserve is also famous for its large numbers of lions not to mention the other distinctive African wildlife such as Elephants, Antelopes, Giraffes to Leopards and Hyenas and large groups of Hippo and Crocodile. There is also a reasonable amount of the rare Black Rhino and Cheetah. The quantity and variety of wildlife in the Masai Mara is simply breathtaking.

Another of Kenya's attractions is the Indian Ocean town of Mombasa, an historic region with Arabic influences. Mombasa is the hub of the resort scene with miles and miles of beautiful white sand beaches. For those visiting Kenya, Mombasa is definitely worth a visit for a few days after your safari.
